air ~ porcelain

earth - tangerine

water ~ misty

This is my finished series, earth, water, and air. I'm titling them Porcelain, Tangerine, and Misty. Those are songs I was listening to that kind of inspired the pieces. I used a layering technique on all three collages, which took FOREVER, but I am really happy with the finished products! I love bright colors, and most of my art portrays a happy mood, so I think this shows my style pretty well. Each piece is made up of photos from the Franklin Park Conservatory. The pieces are tied together with graphic circles and similar photoshop filters. Who knows.. maybe I'll send them to the conservatory and see what they think! haha. Well it's 12:30 a.m. so shanelle is OUT!

HERE'S MY PROGRESS TODAY!

this is the water one that i'm working on now. i don't know what i'm doing with all these different images, but hopefully i'll figure it out!

Thursday, May 21, 2009

ok now i'm on a new track. i'm going to base my project around water, earth, and air. for the water project i'll use images of fish, for air i'll use images of birds, and for earth.. well i dont know yet. there is an abundance of squirrels on this campus...

I'm stuck now. I have all my pictures with me but I can't think of a theme for the third project. I have so far a water and plant theme, and some awesome pictures to work with. I think I'll just get started and see if anything comes to me!

so our next and final project is a series of three. i have NO ideas, so i'm going to brainstorm. i want to do something that really relates to me, kind of like the self portrait but not a portrait. i'll figure something out...

THE STAR!

HERE IS THE STAR CARD. I LOVE IT. BECAUSE I'M IN IT. AND ITS AWESOME! OK, I'M WRITING IN ALL CAPS BECAUSE I'M EXCITED. THIS CARD INCLUDES THE WATER AND STAR ELEMENTS. I MADE A SHIT TON OF LAYERS AND THATS WHY THIS LOOKS SO SWEET. THE WATER IS TRANSLUCENT AND IS MADE WITH THE GRADIENT TOOL. YEAH!

adding stars and water

ok so this is the card so far. i've been adding layers onto the face in a swirly flowy way. the stars are loose around the head to look like hair. they will eventually fade into the background (not sure what that will be yet) and i'm beginning to put water in the corner. we'll see where it goes!

star

well it is now 12:00 and i need to go to lunch. I've taken a picture of me and messed it up in photoshop. i gave it the cut out filter and opened it in illustrator, and now i'm in the process of making layers upon layers upone LAYERS. sickening.

The Star

I've decided to start with the tarot card "The Star". I eventually want to do the sun and the moon, and the lovers, also known as love. This card represents a bright future, joy, harmony, positiveness, etc. There is usually a woman depicted pouring water while looking hopefully to the stars. I'm going to use myself for this project. here are some sketches..

card 1

So here's the first OC card I finished. The Towers one is a work in progress. This card includes students from the early 1900's in the composites in Towers (including Helen Keller! top right), and the background is a photo of an old clock and stained glass window in the Philomathean Room.

CARDS

So our next project is "fictitious playing cards". we're starting out with making one card, but i want to make a few just to have a theme going. instead of doing the traditional french version that we use today (hearts, diamonds, clubs, spades) i'm going to do tarot cards. they're interesting and it will give me room to interpret whatever i want for the images. i think i'll stick with the original suits (cups, wands, pentacles, coins) and instead of jack queen king it will be page, knight, queen, king. There are a lot of sweet tarot cards and ive always loved the images illustrated by pamela coleman smith, the Rider-waite-smith deck. well, i'm gonna go get started.

done.

This is the finished product. I wanted to represent the telekinesis portion of Fatima's personality with all of the circles. I tried really hard to stay away from neons, and i think i succeeded. Fatima said she likes graphic retro art, so this was my first attempt at that style. I like it!

For real.

Ok so we are doing an abstract portrait on someone in the class. My project is on Fatima. She likes graphic, retro art, would be a cheetah, and is an aries. she would like to have telekenesis. i've figured out through the course of this project so far, that sometimes you have to make things that you don't like. I REALLY wanted to put neon colors in this, but they are Fatima's least favorite colors. Anyway, this is it so far!

Louise

We're doing a caricature of a teacher. I chose to do mine on Louise Captein, my painting teacher. Currently in her class I am exploring the works and techniques of Van Gogh, so I decided to turn her portrait into a Van Gogh style painting. This is the finished product!

I put a tulip in her hand because Louise is from the Netherlands. Holland is stereotyped with tulips and windmills, and she told me that she lived the stereotypical Dutch life. As a child she used to clean tulip bulbs to send to America, so I thought that would be appropriate. I used a swirly background and tried to incorporate as many colors as I could to copy Van Gogh's style.

Self Portrait

I started out changing the hue of the original photo to red. Then I made layers and erased pieces with different opacities. I wanted the paisley pattern to show through and I wanted to show different layers of images. I made a background underneath all of the layers and used the wacom tablet and the eraser tool to write in the lyrics and lines of my life. I wanted to use quotes that describe me to make it more personal.

Logotype

This is the logotype I ended up with. I'm Shanelle Lynne Lewis. I'm used to using a different signature, but a little change never hurt anybody. This logotype kind of reminds me of JRR Tolkien's signature in the Lord Of The Rings books, which I love. The double L's were a little confining at first, but ended up making a nice rectangular box. I like what I have done, even if it's not what I'm used to. Maybe I'll actually use this in the future.
